Food at Fountains
There is no better way to begin or end your visit to the Fountains Abbey and
Studley Royal estate than with a drink, snack or hot meal at our restaurant.
You can't fail to recognise the quality of ingredients and great tasting food
that our restaurant produces but what you may not know is that all of the food
created in our restaurant adheres to the National Trust Food Policy, an initiative
that is designed to 'reconnect' the food chain between producers and consumers.
Here at the National Trust we've recognised how attitudes towards the food we
eat are changing; in particular our increasing interest in where our food comes
from, how it ends up on our plate and how far removed it is from its original,
natural state.
Therefore we've created our food policy in order to become an agent for change;
we want consumers to enjoy preparing and eating food that comes from a known source
and that is healthy, tasty and seasonal. At the same time we want to see farmers
rewarded for producing quality food whilst protecting and enhancing the countryside
so that it may continue to prosper.
In our restaurant we aspire to use fresh local ingredients wherever possible,
purchase our produce from local suppliers and also buy seasonal food as available.
All our ingredients are also free from genetically modified organisms and our
eggs are free range. Our venison is free range from the estate and we source our
lamb from Redmire Farm in Skipton. Our beef comes from R & J Catering Butchers
based in Kirkby Malzeard and the cheese in our sandwiches is Wensleydale, hand
made in Hawes according to a time-honoured recipe.
We stock the delicious Yorkshire Crisps, Yorkshire Country Fruit Wines and Taylors
of Harrogate Tea.
Visitor Centre Restaurant
The large restaurant at the Visitor Centre uses locally grown, seasonal and sustainably
produced food wherever possible. The licensed restaurant is open from 10am daily
for morning coffee, light snacks, hot lunches and afternoon tea.
Fresh seasonal home-made soup is a best seller, as are the tasty home-made cakes,
biscuits and sweet or savoury scones.
The family friendly restaurant has a children's menu designed with their taste
buds in mind, Trusty the Hedgehog packed lunch boxes and an indoor play area.
With its colourful decorative ceiling mimicking that of the estate's ornate St
Mary's Church, a Victorian high gothic masterpiece, the restaurant is a wonderful
contemporary venue that contrasts perfectly with the historical estate.
Studley Tearoom
The cosy tearoom at Studley Royal seats up to 60 and serves morning coffee, light
snacks and afternoon tea. The tearoom adopts the same local, seasonal and sustainable
food policy as the large restaurant and is a popular place to relax after a stroll
around the estate, with a cup of tea and a home-made cake or a delicious local
Yorkshire ice-cream.
The tearoom has fabulous views over Studley Lake and on towards the medieval
deer park, home to over 500 wild deer.
Opening times vary throughout the year:
- Spring / Summer - daily, 10am - 5pm
- Autumn / Winter - Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 10am - 4pm (open daily during school
holidays)
