Spring 2010

The stone arrives at my Studio after some of the waste is removed by sawyers
at York Minster’s Stoneyard.
I had been told by the quarry and by the Minster masons that the stone was one
of the finest they had seen, and as I began to work on it I realised just how
lucky I was!
I start to cut a series of tangents (chamfers), large at first and then progressively
smaller. These chamfers eventually form a perfect curved surface around my stone.
The systematic removal of the waste stone creates patterns that appear and disappear
as the desired form is produced.
Once the external curve is complete I begin to form the internal curves.
