The Serpentine tunnel was cut through the hill and lined with stone in the 1730s.
It leads visitors up from the water garden to the High Ride; a path along the
top of the valley commanding wonderful views across the garden.
The tunnel is designed to give visitors a gentle scare as they enter into darkness
without the reassurance of seeing daylight at the other end. Follow the tunnels
twists and turns and you’ll arrive at the High Ride path just next to the gothic
inspired
Octagon Tower.
Pleasure gardens were like playgrounds for the Georgians; providing entertainment. Features
like the Serpentine Tunnel would have been a welcome amusement, particularly to
youthful and high spirited visitors.
